    Road cycling

The cycle path through the Perlacher Forest is the most pleasant route to get from the city to the racing bike routes outside the city gates. The path is in excellent condition (tarmac) and points straight south, the direction in which most racing cyclists head. The only disadvantage is that it is very busy on sunny weekends. Nevertheless, I would recommend this section on the weekends too - as a racing cyclist you just have to be a little considerate of those who are not so experienced on their bikes.

Flat, straight and good asphalt: Actually a racetrack, but here it is important to take into consideration other cyclists. I've had serious accidents here. Radler seen. Therefore: In oncoming traffic, speed down!

THE route out of Munich. What you do not notice on the way out of town: It's easy uphill. On the way back it is all the more beautiful :)

    Frequently Asked Questions

What types of cycling routes can I find connected to the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path?

The Perlacher Forst Cycle Path serves as an excellent gateway to a variety of cycling routes. While the main path is a straight, well-maintained tarmac route ideal for road cyclists heading south out of Munich, it connects to numerous other paths. You can find routes that lead further into the countryside, offering scenic roads through fields near Oedenpullach, or even extend towards viewpoints with glimpses of the Alps near Deining. Many cyclists use it as a starting point for longer racing bike tours, but there are also loop options within the wider Perlacher Forst area that cater to more relaxed rides.

How busy does the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path get, especially on weekends?

The Perlacher Forst Cycle Path is very popular and can get quite busy, particularly on sunny weekends. Cyclists describe it as feeling like a 'racetrack' due to its flat, straight, and well-paved nature. While it's a fantastic route, it's important to be considerate of other users, including less experienced cyclists and those on foot. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during weekdays or earlier in the morning on weekends.

What is the overall difficulty and terrain of the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path?

The path is generally considered easy to moderate. It features excellent, smooth tarmac, making it very accessible. While it's largely flat, there's a gentle, almost imperceptible uphill gradient when heading south out of the city, which makes the return journey feel effortlessly downhill. This smooth, consistent terrain makes it suitable for a wide range of cyclists, from beginners to experienced road cyclists.

Are there any specific landmarks, viewpoints, or natural features to look out for along the path?

While the path itself is primarily a direct route through the forest, the Perlacher Forst offers several points of interest. You'll experience a pleasant forest environment, which includes a biotope. From connected routes, you can find scenic roads through fields, such as those near Oedenpullach. On clear days, some viewpoints, particularly those near Deining, offer glimpses of the distant Alps. The historic Kugleralm, a large beer garden, is also a notable amenity along the way.

What are the best options for parking and public transport access to the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path?

The Perlacher Forst Cycle Path is well-connected and accessible. Many starting points, such as those near Kolumbusplatz or Deisenhofen, are easily reachable by public transport from Munich. For those driving, parking is available at various access points around the forest. However, be aware that parking areas can fill up quickly, especially on busy weekends, so arriving early is advisable.

Is the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path suitable for winter cycling?

While the path's excellent tarmac surface makes it generally robust, its suitability for winter cycling depends on conditions. In light snow or dry, cold weather, it can still be ridden. However, during heavy snowfall or icy conditions, parts of the path may not be cleared or could be slippery. It's always best to check local weather and trail conditions before heading out for a winter ride.

Is the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path family-friendly and suitable for children?

Yes, the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path is generally considered family-friendly and suitable for children. Its smooth, flat tarmac surface makes for an easy ride. However, due to its popularity and the speed of some cyclists, especially on busy weekends, parents should ensure children are comfortable riding in shared spaces and be mindful of other users. For younger children or those less confident, visiting on weekdays or during off-peak hours might provide a more relaxed experience.

Are there any dog-friendly sections or considerations for bringing dogs on the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path?

The Perlacher Forst itself is a natural area where dogs are generally welcome, often on a leash. While the cycle path is primarily for bikes, many people walk or run with their dogs alongside or on connected forest trails. If cycling with a dog, ensure it is well-behaved and kept under control to avoid startling other cyclists or pedestrians. Always follow local regulations regarding leashing and waste disposal.

Are there cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path?

Yes, there are amenities available. A notable spot is the Kugleralm, a large and historic beer garden located along the way, famous for its local lore. Additionally, as the path is close to Munich and connects to various towns, you'll find other cafes, pubs, and accommodation options in the surrounding areas, particularly as you venture further south or closer to the city's edge.

What is the typical distance and estimated time to cycle the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path?

The main stretch of the Perlacher Forst Cycle Path is a direct route. While its exact length can vary depending on your starting and ending points, it's typically used as a segment within longer rides. For example, a common outbound journey from the city through the Forst might cover several kilometers. As it's a smooth and relatively flat path, cyclists can cover distances quickly. A full round trip through the main section and back could take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, depending on your pace and how far you extend into connecting routes.
