The small town of Carmine Superiore was also badly hit by the plague in 1630; the writer Manzoni reports about it in his famous novel "The Fiancés".
Because many sick people had sought refuge in the church, the building had to be disinfected after the end of the epidemic, which is why the valuable fresco cycles were covered with a layer of mortar. Only during the restoration work in the years 1932 to 1933 and 1997 to 2002 were the paintings brought to light again.

The Canero path leads through an area with very high mosquito populations. Be sure to wear long clothes and rub mosquito repellent on yourself. !! (Last time I only saw it in the jungle in the border area between Mexico and Guatemala)
Otherwise a very nice hike! We recommend.

        Worth a visit, very impressive.

        Wikipedia:
The construction of the Romanesque church of San Gottardo with a late Romanesque bell tower began in 1332 and was not completed until 70 years later. This is shown by an inscription above the main portal. In a further construction phase, which was not completed until 1431, the church was extended to accommodate the growing number of believers. The church was consecrated in 1574 by Charles Borromeo. Until around 1875, the forecourt of the church served as a cemetery. The interior and exterior frescoes, dating from the 14th century, show scenes from the Bible according to the Ambrosian tradition. From the outside, Saints Gottardo and Christopher can be seen in particular. Christ surrounded by the evangelists is depicted on the vault. The wall behind the altar shows a fresco of a crucifixion and another fresco of Saints Gottardo and Peter. The vaults show twelve scenes from the life of Saint Gottardo.

Carmine Superiore belonged to the Duchy of Milan until around 1710. At that time, the dukes of the Visconti family dedicated the church to Saint Gotthard, the patron saint of gout sufferers. To this day, sick and infirm people make pilgrimages here in the hope of relief and healing from their illnesses.

In 2001, the municipality of Cannobio completed the extensive restoration of the church and its frescoes.
