The anchor commemorates the Danish sailors who perished between 1939 and 1945. 1,600 names are embedded in a lead capsule under the anchor. On All Saints' Day, relatives remember their family members to this day. Every year there is a short ceremony on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, followed by a Christmas service in the seaman's home, today's Hotel Bethel, not far from the anchor. The ceremony was broadcast nationwide until the mid-1990s.
