A modern chapel, only consecrated in 2000.
The 7-Kapellen-Weg (7-Kapellen-Weg), which starts at the Siebenschläferkapelle in Stegaurach, passes here. This is the fourth chapel on the way. The third chapel is the Holy Cross Chapel a little south of Mühlendorf, the fifth the Chapel of the Holy Family near Grasmannsdorf.

    Hiking

The small chapel is located directly on the Kunigundenweg, which leads over a distance of 110 km from the Kunigundenkapelle at Aub to Bamberg to the tomb of St. Kunigunde in the Kaiserdom. The construction of the chapel was initiated in 1987 on the initiative of the "Kreuzschuher Runde", a regular's table of young families. In 1998 the Kapellenbauverein decided to lay the foundation stone and in 2000 the small chapel was inaugurated.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main hiking trails connected to Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh?

The Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh is a significant point on two notable routes. It serves as the fourth chapel along the 7-Kapellen-Weg, a picturesque trail starting at the Siebenschläferkapelle in Stegaurach. Additionally, it is directly located on the long-distance Kunigundenweg, which stretches 110 km from Aub to Bamberg, making it a relevant stop for long-distance hikers and cyclists.

Are there any easy or family-friendly walking routes directly from the chapel?

Yes, the area around Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh offers various options suitable for families and those seeking easier walks. While the chapel is part of longer routes, there are shorter, more accessible paths that allow you to explore the edge of the Steigerwald forest without significant elevation changes. Look for local circular routes that incorporate the chapel as a starting or turning point.

What is the terrain and difficulty level of the trails around Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh?

The terrain around the chapel is generally gentle, situated at the edge of the Steigerwald forest. Most trails are well-maintained and suitable for casual hikers and cyclists. While the chapel itself is at an elevation of approximately 360 meters, the immediate surrounding paths typically feature mild inclines and declines, making them accessible for a wide range of fitness levels. The longer Kunigundenweg and 7-Kapellen-Weg may have more varied sections, but the immediate vicinity is considered easy to moderate.

Where can I find parking near Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh?

While specific dedicated parking lots are not always highlighted, the chapel's central location within the village of Kreuzschuh (on Forststraße) suggests general accessibility. Visitors typically find parking in designated public areas within the village or along the roadside where permitted. It's advisable to look for available spots upon arrival, especially during peak times or events like the annual Kirchweih.

Is Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh accessible by public transport?

Information regarding direct public transport links to Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh is not extensively detailed. However, as part of Stegaurach, it is likely served by local bus routes connecting to larger towns like Bamberg. Visitors should check local bus schedules for connections to Kreuzschuh or Stegaurach, followed by a short walk to the chapel.

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh?

Generally, dogs are welcome on public hiking trails in Germany, including those around Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh and within the Steigerwald forest. However, it is always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially near the chapel, in agricultural areas, or when encountering wildlife. Please ensure you clean up after your pet to maintain the natural beauty of the area.

The charm lies in the gentle rolling hills and the peaceful atmosphere of the forest edge.

What amenities like cafes or restaurants are available near Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh?

As a small village, Kreuzschuh may have limited direct amenities. For a wider selection of cafes, restaurants, or guesthouses, visitors might need to venture into the larger municipality of Stegaurach or the nearby city of Bamberg. It's a good idea to pack snacks and drinks, especially if you plan a longer hike, and check local listings for current opening hours of any establishments in Kreuzschuh.

What is the best season to visit Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh for hiking, considering crowd levels?

While the chapel is popular year-round, the annual "Kreuzschuher Kirchweih" in June is a particularly vibrant time but also the most crowded. For hiking with fewer people, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). During these times, the weather is often pleasant, and the natural scenery is beautiful, with fewer visitors than in peak summer or during the festival.

What is the historical significance of the Kunigundenkapelle Kreuzschuh?

Despite the village of Kreuzschuh having a history dating back to 1317, the Kunigundenkapelle itself is relatively modern, built in 1999/2000 and inaugurated in 2000. Its construction was a community effort initiated by the "Kreuzschuher Runde e.V." in honor of Saint Kunigunde. It represents a contemporary landmark that connects the ancient village history with modern spiritual and recreational trails like the Kunigundenweg and 7-Kapellen-Weg.
