Bike Touring Highlight
Spanning 1.4 miles (2.3 km) over the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, the Mersey Gateway Bridge is an impressive architectural feat. Opened in 2017, the toll bridge is now one of the main connections between Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire. Accompanying the construction of the bridge, a 28.5 ha (70 acre) nature reserve was founded to encourage biodiversity in the area. The absence of a bike lane and heavy traffic makes the bridge unfriendly for cyclists, but it is nonetheless a wonderful modern bridge to look at.
