The cemetery in Gelsenkirchen Hessler was opened in 1902. Special features are many graves with Cyrillic writing and a memorial stone in memory of Soviet forced laborers, as well as a miner's monument for victims of the mine fire in 1942 at the mine Wilhelmine-Victoria.

After building a prayer hall in 1893 and having had its own pastor in 1900, the Protestant community in Heßler decided to create its own cemetery. This can be inaugurated on August 10, 1902. Five years later, the city administration in Heßler decides to set up a communal cemetery.

The west cemetery in the district of Hessler emerged from the cemetery of the Protestant church community, which was opened in 1902. The site was bought by the city of Gelsenkirchen from the community in 1908 and the city cemetery, which has since been expanded in several sections. Today, the area of the facility, called “Westfriedhof” because of its location in the city area, is around 16 hectares. The mourning hall, inaugurated in 1912, has been on the City of Gelsenkirchen's list of monuments since 1985.
