The gorge has a rich history intertwined with both religious and literary lore. It's most famous for being a secret meeting place for the Lollards, a 15th-century religious group, during a time of persecution of followers of Catholicism.

The chasm's unique atmosphere also makes it a strong candidate for the Green Chapel in the medieval tale, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight".
