The Trudenstein is an impressive granite formation in the Harz National Park between Schierke and Drei Annen Hohne. It is located south of the Hohnekopf mountain, directly on the Glashüttenweg trail, at an elevation of approximately 735 meters above sea level. Since 1894, the rock formation has been accessible via a rather steep steel ladder installed by the Harz Club.

The Trudenstein got its name because part of the cliff is said to bear a certain resemblance to a druid. The Celts called women who could summon and control the forces of nature and foresee the future. With a little imagination, you can recognize a face with a pointed nose, high forehead, and prominent chin on the rock formation.

At the Trudenstein, you can see the typical characteristics of woolsack weathering of granite. The almost rectangular, cuboid-shaped boulders, characteristic of this type of weathering, are particularly pronounced here. A fleeting first impression might therefore mislead you into thinking that the Trudenstein is a human creation. However, all the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the cliff are naturally formed. Also impressive are the massive granite boulders that overhang significantly in several places.

The climb up the Trudenstein, located above a historic granite quarry, is somewhat arduous due to the ancient ladder. At the top, however, a picturesque view of large parts of the eastern and southern Harz Mountains rewards your efforts. In good weather, you can see Schierke, Wurmberg, and the Stöberhai, about 15 kilometers away.

This imposing rock formation has long been a popular hiking destination and, for several years, has also been a stop on the popular Harz Witches' Trail. In front of the Trudenstein, a rest area with a table and seating invites you to take a well-deserved break. The towns of Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke are good starting points for a hike to the attractive viewing rock.
