According to tradition, the Norman Duc Robert I (called Le Magnifique or Le Diable), the father of William the Conqueror, a Norman army commander, the Comte d'Orson, have commissioned the construction of a bridge that the two shores of Couesnon combines. The permanent passage served as a militarily important link between Normandy and Brittany. The name of the community Pontorson is also attributed to this bridge - the Pont d'Orson.
The bridge over the Couesnon north of the village, which is open to pedestrians, cyclists and riders, today offers a pleasant alternative to the busy inner-city road bridge to cross the border river between Brittany and Normandy.

@ Les Guilvinistes: this tip is wrong. Both bridges are in Pontorson, including the pedestrian bridge.
