Nothing is known from documents except the church's construction date, which is believed to have been built at the end of the 11th century. It was originally a three-aisled, Romanesque columned basilica with a flat roof, no transept, and a projecting west tower. The magnificent Romanesque crypt, except for the tower, was destroyed by bombs on January 2, 1945, but fortunately it was preserved. Reconstruction began in 1946, and the church was consecrated in 1949.
