The hilltop castle, built from 1250 onward, was the seat of the Plauen Vogts. Later, it served as the official residence of various rulers and was used as a prison from 1852 onward. In 1945, almost the entire complex, along with large parts of Plauen, was destroyed in devastating bombing raids. The 16-sided Red Tower and several cell blocks survived, serving as a correctional facility after the war until 2007 and were demolished in 2013. Today, the Schlossberg is home to the campus of the Plauen State Academy of Advanced Studies.
