Until 1989, the Saale at this point formed the border between Germany and the GDR and on the East German side was directly on the shore a boundary wall. The Hirschberg district Sparnberg was then completely surrounded by the wall and only after the reunification of the old pedestrian bridge over the Saale was rebuilt. Today you can easily switch from Bavaria to Thuringia and enjoy the view over the water.

The new bridge was inaugurated on September 17, 1993. On this occasion, the Sparnbergers organized the first bridge festival together with the Rudolphsteiners. Since then it has been a symbol of Germany's unity.
