Originally inaugurated as Michelbrunnen in 1910, the former figure was melted down in 1943 for military purposes. In 1955-1956 the fountain was transformed into a barbarian fountain.

After the bronze figure was removed, the plinth of the monument remained empty for twelve years and the fountain was left to decay. In 1956 a bronze figure by the sculptor Dorothea von Philipsborn was used, which was cast in the Dresden ore foundry Pirner & Franz. The figure, which is 1.20 m tall and weighs 56 kg, depicts the shepherd girl Barbara, who looks dreamily at the water running from the two fish that she is holding horizontally in her hands into the fountain basin.
