Shortly after the foundation of the village of Sint Laurens, the first church of the village was built in the 13th century. It was destroyed during the guerrilla war fought by the Spanish and the Geuzen on Walcheren in the years 1572-1574. After the church of Brigdamme (a nearby hamlet) burned down in 1562, the inhabitants of that village were added to the parish of Sint Laurens. New construction followed in 1644. At that time, in accordance with the Reformed tradition, a church without a choir was built, in the form of a hall church.
