The "Hockenheim Rhine Bend" nature and landscape conservation area and wildlife sanctuary extends across the entire floodplain between Hockenheim, Ketsch, Altlußheim, and the Rhine.
It comprises 30 nature reserves with a total area of 656 hectares, enclosed by an 1,847-hectare landscape conservation area.
It was declared a protected area in 1990 to preserve the last remnants of the formerly extensive green spaces in the Rhine lowlands, the diverse wetlands, the typical waterways, and the forests that serve as habitats for endangered and threatened animal species.
