In 1906, a pier with a restaurant was built on the beach in front of Sellin, extending 508 meters into the sea. In the years that followed, the bridge was severely damaged by ice drift and fire, so in 1925 a new, approximately 500-meter-long pier with a platform and concert hall was built. Sellin seaside resort photographer Hans Knospe had fought to have the pier rebuilt since it was closed in 1978. When then-German President Richard von Weizsäcker visited Sellin in 1991, he found a committed ally. His photographs served as a model, and the pier was rebuilt in its historic 1927 form. When the 394-meter-long pier was officially opened in 1998, he was already 99 years old and died a few months later.
