During the Moorish and Aragonese periods, the sea reached right up to the fortress walls. An 18-meter-wide arch, the Arc de la Drassana (Dockyard Arch), dates back to the Arab period and was only uncovered in 1961. It allowed ships to enter the fortress directly.
