The three-aisled brick church was built in the late Romanesque period from the second half of the 12th century as part of a collegiate monastery and is considered one of the oldest brick buildings in the Altmark. Initially, the building did not have a church tower. In the 14th century, a massive tower decorated with panels was built over the west end of the ship.
