The cemetery surrounding the church quickly became cramped to accommodate the many deceased from the fifteen villages making up the parish. In order to make room for the newly deceased, the bones of the ancestors were grouped together in a pit. This practice gave rise to a ritual in the presence of the family which was followed until 1860. In order to protect the pit from bad weather, a building was built in 1150 opposite the church.
The bones are stacked to a height of 5 m and represent a volume of 104 m3
