On September 8, 1919, Maria Eleonora Gregorc was born out of wedlock in a farmhouse in the municipality of Kappel am Krappfeld. She grew up in neglected conditions with her grandmother until the age of six. In 1922, her penniless mother, Mathilde Gregorc, married the baker Jakob Lassnig. In 1925, Maria moved to Klagenfurt to live with her mother and from that year on also used the surname Lassnig. There she attended the Ursuline Convent School, from which she graduated with a high school diploma.
