Michiel de Ruyter is the country's greatest naval hero. He was born and raised in Zeeland. Until his move to Amsterdam in 1655, De Ruyter lived in Vlissingen. Michiel de Ruyter's name will forever be linked to the Dutch navy. After all, he played an important role in the defense of the Netherlands. He also helped modernize the Dutch naval fleet. And he was one of the founders of the Marine Corps. De Ruyter's birth year is commemorated every fifty years. The last time this happened with numerous activities was in 2007.
