The Kiel Castle Garden, once laid out as a small Renaissance garden, was expanded into a magnificent Baroque garden by Duchess Friederike Amalie (Gottorf) in 1695. After its heyday, the garden experienced changing times of care and neglect. It was only with the Enlightenment that a new development in garden art took hold: in the middle of the 19th century, the court garden inspector of Plön Castle was commissioned to convert the Kiel Garden into an English landscape garden, with scenically curved paths and loosely planted trees. The traces of the two world wars and the subsequent use as a parking lot robbed it of its former splendor. With the restoration of the garden, the green area has regained its original charm. The Kiel Castle Garden has been converted to be barrier-free. The “Schloßgarten” bus stop is served by bus lines 32 and 62.
