Famous for the atmospheric hill climb early October every year since about 1930. Worth a visit if you’ve not been. How those riders do it in a third of my time I’ll never fathom. Stable Bar, next to the hotel at the top, has a good garden but can be busy. The Packhorse Inn, just down the road in Little Longstone, is also really good, inside or in the small beer garden round the back.

Try to come into it with some speed to give you some momentum to make the climb easier. The descent through Cressbrook allows you to gain a lot of speed.
