The cowshed is a 11 m high, 17 m wide and 24 m deep rock gate. From the Lichtenhain waterfall you need about 30 minutes on foot to the Felsentor Kuhstall. Right next to it is the Himmelsleiter (stairs in the rock), which is definitely recommended 😉.

The Kuhstall is a rock gate 11 meters high, 17 meters wide and 24 meters deep. Its name probably came about during the Thirty Years' War, because the local residents hid their cattle from the Swedish soldiers in the very wide rock gate.

If you cross this rock gate, you get to a great vantage point over the Saxon rocky landscape. A crevice in the rock leads to the ascent to the Himmelsleiter, a very narrow, steep staircase that leads to the remains of an earlier castle.

The cowshed is a main attraction of the famous Saxon Switzerland Painter's Trail. August von Goethe visited this rock as early as June 1819.

Wonderful view of the rock world, especially if you climb the ladder to heaven! The name Kuhstall is attributed to two possible reasons: On the one hand, during the Thirty Years' War the population of the surrounding towns hid their cattle from marauding Swedish soldiers in the very wide rock gate. On the other hand, it is assumed that the inhabitants of the medieval castle, which had degenerated into a nest of robber barons, housed the cattle there that they looted during their raids.
