Mikkjal Dánjalsson á Ryggi (1879–1956) was born in Miðvágur and lived in Gásadalur. He was a teacher and politician.However, Mikkjal á Ryggi is best known for his literary work, which includes poems, psalms, local histories, and schoolbooks.The number of psalms Mikkjal á Ryggi wrote is remarkable. No other Faroese writer wrote as many psalms as he did. Furthermore, Mikkjal á Ryggi was the first to write local histories.In the spring of 2011, a statue in Mikkjal á Ryggi's honor was unveiled. The statue depicts Mikkjal á Ryggi in full size, made of bronze, sanding an open stone book. The book features quotes from Mikkjal á Ryggi's work.The statue was created by sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen. It is located in front of Mikkjal's childhood home, í Beitinum, in Miðvágur.
