    What do we see?
    • Wrought iron gate with decorative scrollwork.
    • Gold decorations, including a coat of arms with three lilies (a traditional French symbol).
    • A mural crown (civil crown on top of the shield), indicating a city or municipal emblem.
    • The letter “A” in a laurel wreath on either side – possibly referring to André or Auguste (for example in a historical or urban context), or a reference to the name of a foundation or donor.

The Porte de Paris is an ornate wrought iron gate in Reims, commissioned in 1774 for the coronation of King Louis XVI to replace the old medieval Porte de Vesle from the 14th century. Created by local blacksmiths Lecoq and Revel for 26000 livres, the gate was completed too late for the coronation ceremony and was finally installed in 1776 along the Vesle River.

Due to changing urban needs and increasing automobile traffic, the gate has been relocated multiple times and now stands in the Basses Promenades on rue de Bir-Hakeim, having been classified as a historic monument in 1919.

Napoleon Bonaparte passed through this gate on March 14, 1814, to the cheers of the local population during his campaign.
