The jets were originally stationed at Bitola Air Base, a key base for the Macedonian Air Force during the Cold War. The base was closed in 1999, and the jets were left abandoned. They serve as a reminder of the city's history as a military base, but are in poor condition.
In recent years, the jets have become a popular target for vandals. They have been sprayed with graffiti, and some parts have been removed.
