The Unstrut ([ˈʊnʃtruːt], sometimes also [ˈʊnstruːt]) is a 192 km long left tributary of the Saale and its water-richest inflow. The catchment area is almost the entire Thuringian basin with a part of the western and northern border plates, parts of the southern Harz and smaller parts of the northern Thuringian forest. The rivers, which are richer in water, and the Unstrut itself arise in the outlying mountains, which are more rainy than the basin.
