The Church of San Gil Abad is one of the most important Gothic temples in the city of Burgos, surpassed only in artistic value by the Cathedral. It is believed that a chapel dedicated to Saint Bartholomew once stood on its site. It was mentioned in a papal bull of Pope Alexander III as early as 1163.
