Burgos Cathedral

Burgos Cathedral is the most representative monument of the city. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. It is the only Spanish cathedral that has this distinction independently. Without a doubt, it is one of the jewels of universal Gothic art.

On the 13th stage of the Camino Frances (counting according to Rother), Burgos is one of the highlights on the Way of St. James. The cathedral is hugely imposing and a wonderful testament to the faith of its builders.

It all began in 1080, when Alfonso VI, King of the old Kingdom of Castile, promoted the construction of a Romanesque-style cathedral in the city of Burgos: the Church of Santa María de Burgos. In 1219, a very important ceremony for the Kingdom of Castile took place in this church: the wedding of the then King of Castile, Ferdinand III, with the Germanic princess Beatrice of Swabia.
