The Pleißenbach district park, part of the "City on the River" project, is the largest of Chemnitz's intervention areas as European Capital of Culture 2025. The site of the former Altendorf freight depot, located between Beyerstraße and Rudolf-Krahl-Straße, was characterized by brownfield sites, natural succession, and an ecologically degraded, heavily built-up natural area. Following the withdrawal of the railway, the opportunity arose to create a new urban space with publicly accessible open areas, as well as additional space for housing, community facilities, and businesses, including flood protection measures.
