The new graduation pavilion was inaugurated in 2009 in the rose garden in the old town of Salzgitter-Bad. It was built thanks to the commitment of the citizens' association and numerous donations.

In principle, it is a system for salt production, similar to a saline. The natural thermal salt brine extracted from a depth of over 200 meters is passed through bundles of brushwood. The evaporation increases the salt content of the brine.

A graduation pavilion is a facility for salt extraction. It consists of a wooden framework that is filled with bundles of brushwood (mainly black thorn); the salinity of the brine that is passed through is increased by the natural evaporation of the water. The functional principle is thus similar to that of a saline. The 25 percent natural thermal brine, bubbling from a depth of 243 meters in Salzgitter, is one of the strongest in Central Europe, which was mentioned in a document as early as 1125.
