In 1943, a military base was set up by General Erwin Rommel, responsible for the defense of the Atlantic Wall in the Northwest. He transformed the beach into a vast construction site: minefield, construction of blockhouses, booby-trapped shells. In August 1944, following the landing of Allied forces in Normandy, German troops were ordered to withdraw. They take the time to dynamite the lighthouses, destroy their installations and devastate the Hameau du Hourdel.
