The edge of both stages of the waterfall is formed by two layers of lava. Between the two layers of lava lies a soft layer of river gravel. River gravel also lies beneath the second layer of basalt. The falling water can easily erode these soft gravel deposits, eroding the basalt layers and regularly breaking off. This is how the gorge was formed over the last 10,000 years, i.e., since the end of the Ice Age. On average, the erosive retreat is 30 cm per year.
