      Eckerwald Memorial

      The Eckerwald Memorial Trail

The memorial trail leads through a forest, the "Eckerwald", past the ruins of a shale oil production facility from 1944/45 called "Wüste 10".

Under the code name "Wüste", ten production plants with seven associated concentration camps were built in the foothills of the Swabian Alb in the last two years of the war. Here, attempts were made to extract oil from shale rock in order to resolve the fuel crisis at the end of World War II. It was an unsuccessful attempt.

The concentration camps were all subcamps of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp in Alsace. The prisoners mostly came from the political resistance in the occupied countries of Europe. Conditions in the Schörzingen camp, 4 km away, were catastrophic. Around 500 prisoners were forced into slave labor every day to build "Wüste 10". Over 500 people died in this camp.

You can see concrete blocks set into excavated earth hollows, water basins, brick walls, foundations, posts and shafts. The atmosphere in this forest, which was reforested in the 1950s, gives the memorial path a very unique atmosphere.

This is where the annual commemorations take place with survivors and their relatives from all over Europe.

Impressive concentration camp memorial in the forest. Here inmates from the concentration camp Schörzingen had to mine oil slate under inhumane conditions and continue processing.
