The pumping station that De Vlaamse Waterweg nv completed in early 2016 on top of the dam in the Durme will put an end to the water problems in the area. During heavy rainfall, the pumping station pumps excess water from the Moervaart to the Durme at a flow rate of 7,500 liters of water per second. The water level in the Moervaart will then rise more slowly, so that there is less chance of flooding throughout the Waasland. Under normal weather conditions, the pumping station pumps much less, but sufficient water to prevent silting up on the tidal Durme.

The pumping station is a dam construction built in the 1970s to protect the Waasland behind it against flooding. After the construction of the Dam, the silting became more than ever Dr Durme's Achilles' heel. Now it is a crossroads of cycling and walking routes
