    Hiking

Rising above the Bayou Macon floodplain in northeastern Louisiana, Poverty Point is an astonishing prehistoric earthwork complex built between 1700 and 1100 BCE by hunter-gatherers who never used metal tools or beasts of burden. Six concentric, C-shaped ridges curl nearly three-quarters of a mile across, flanked by mounds that guided ceremonies, trade, and daily life. Archaeologists estimate workers moved more than fifty million cubic feet of soil in baskets, revealing social organization and engineering skill.
