A monumental tree is a tree that is distinguished from other trees of its kind due to its physical characteristics or historical and cultural importance.

The definition of a monumental tree in the "Monumental Trees Inventory Selection Rules and Marking Standard" prepared by the Turkish Standards Institute is as follows: "A tree that has a natural life long enough to build a bridge between the past and the present, the present and the future, and that reaches dimensions far beyond the usual dimensions of its kind in terms of age, trunk diameter, crown diameter and height; or has a special place in the history, mystical culture and folklore of the region."
