Breisach is located directly on the Rhine. The landmark of the city is the St. Stephansmünster, which, situated on the Münsterberg, towers above the Rhine valley and the houses of the city.
Breisach's history goes back over 4000 years. Since the Neolithic the Breisacher Münsterberg has been continuously settled. The city of Breisach was founded around 369 AD. The Romans recognized the outstanding strategic importance of the Breisachberg and built a fort on "Mons Brisiacus".
