Niedernhall was elevated to town status by Emperor Charles IV in 1356. As a sign of its "town status," the town wall, complete with battlements, towers, and two city gates, was built by 1363. The Salt Gate is a multi-story gate tower with an adjoining gatehouse. The tower stump and arch date from the 14th century, and the tower was renovated and raised in 1966.
