    Legendary walking forest

According to legend, a shepherd was cured here in the 13th century after drinking from a spring. A chapel and a Way of the Cross were built to commemorate this. On the estate behind the chapel you will find a fen surrounded by vast heathland and dry sand ridges. This walking forest of approximately 10 hectares is a pleasant place to walk! You are welcome between sunrise and sunset

    Role of Kempens Landschap

In 2009, our organisation purchased several plots in this forest, located on the border of Herenthout and Nijlen. This also allows the forest to be opened up by the municipality of Herenthout. In addition, disturbing caravans in the area were cleaned up, making the Kruiskensberg a lot more attractive. In recent years, Kempens Landschap purchased several adjacent plots in the neighbouring municipality of Nijlen to safeguard the area.

Be sure to take a break on the terrace (or inside) at CafΓ© 't Kruiske (tkruiske.be/cafe-t-kruiske/).

"'t Kruiske gained its fame several centuries ago. The building, 't Kruiske, was actually a Kempen farm and was named after Kruiskensberg, a place of pilgrimage. The pilgrimage became a place of prayer for children's toothaches. Especially on Good Friday, many people came to the local Way of the Cross from the morning onwards to pray. The pilgrims of that time also drank water from the five wells representing the wounds of Christ. For centuries, the then resident of the small farm 't Kruiske sold beer and lemonade."
