The towpaths are primarily service roads. They are necessary for the maintenance of canals, waterways, banks, quay walls and bridges. The towpaths are also public roads, mostly for walkers and cyclists only. The smooth and car-free cycling connections attract tourist cyclists, cyclists and walkers. Roller skaters and anglers, for example, also use the towpaths. Because of the mixed use of the towpaths, the users have to take each other into account.

Paved cycle path next to the canal. Beautiful straight stretches where you can reach high speeds... Please know that you have to share the towpath here with other users. Courtesy is appropriate here.
