Birthplace of Nicholas of Cusa, Bernkastel-Kues

Nicholas of Cusa was born in 1401 in this house, located on the Nikolausufer at the edge of the Kues district toward Lieser.

However, the house no longer exists in its original form. After being completely renovated in 1570, it returned to private ownership in 1681 from the assets of St. Nicholas Hospital. After many changes, it was close to decay in the 1870s and was acquired by the Cusanus Society and completely renovated by 1980, with the design of the new building from 1570 serving as the benchmark. Today, it is owned by the city of Bernkastel-Kues and is used by the Cusanus Society as a museum and event space.

In addition to changing art exhibitions, the house now houses:

Permanent Exhibition - Life and Work in Pictures

The Great Thinker at the Threshold of the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. The permanent exhibition on the upper floor of St. Cusanus's birthplace, "Nicholas of Cusa 1401–1464: Life and Work in Pictures," documents the life and career of St. Cusanus and highlights key milestones in his work. The exhibition commemorates the completion of his major philosophical work, "De Docta Ignorantia," on February 12, 1440, in Cusa. Compiled and commented by Dr. H. Gestrich in collaboration with the Rhineland-Palatinate State Media Center in Koblenz. Admission to the exhibition costs €2.50; please call for group rates and guided tours.
