Irritating concrete structure in the middle of the forest. Are only remnants of the basalt stone mining in the last century. No bunkers, no relation to the Cold War.

      Well visible, but what purpose?

These concrete elements are the remains of a Loren cable car from the Steinkopf above to Nordheim in the Rhön. Was a good 8 km long. There were several basalt quarries in the Rhön, for example from Fladenen towards the Dreiländereck. Approximately 1 km east of the Sennhütte mountain inn. In Fladen there was still a crushing plant for the basalt stone at the train station. The rock came there by truck. There was also a crushing plant in Nordheim. This was supplied by this Lorenbahn, as the distance to the quarry at the Thüringer Hütte was long and poorly accessible by road. The street was expanded when the RhönParkHotel was built 50 years ago. But basalt mining had already stopped by then. The basalt mining was only worthwhile at the moment because there was a railway line from Fladen to Mellrichstadt around 1898 to 1987 (today it is a museum railway from the Fladungen open-air museum). These igneous basalt formations, cooled in a hexagonal shape, were used to fortify the banks and break waves everywhere in the area, including on the Main and even to the lower end of the Rhine. The basalt crushing plants in Nordheim and Fladungen, located at the respective train stations, were also demolished with the help of pioneers from the Bundeswehr. This happened in the mid-70s together with the Lorenbahn. The foundations in
Agricultural areas have been completely dismantled and the remaining areas do not bother anyone.
