St. Peter's Cathedral in Bautzen, or Tachantska cyrkej swj. Pětra in Upper Sorbian, is one of the largest churches with a single denomination in Germany and the tallest building in Bautzen. It is one of the most important church buildings in Saxony and the oldest church in Upper Lusatia. The cathedral is located on Fleischmarkt in Bautzen's old town, opposite the town hall. The Ortenburg Castle, known in Upper Sorbian as Hród (castle), in Bautzen, stands about 20 meters high on a rocky outcrop above the eastern bank of the Spree River. It was first mentioned in 1405 as "castrum Orthenburg in Budissin." Researchers derive the name from the literal connection with the medieval term "ort" or "ert," meaning a forward-facing position. It gained strategic importance from the nearby river crossings, which, particularly conveniently located between the southern wooded mountain ridges and the northern, often marshy heathlands, converged important west-east traffic routes.
