From autumn 1520 to April 1521, Thomas Müntzer served as a preacher at St. Catherine's Church. His radical views found fertile ground due to social tensions, especially among journeymen.

To prevent unrest in the city, the city council dismissed Müntzer from his service on April 17, 1521. A statue of Thomas Müntzer and a relief depicting the Peasants' War by the sculptor Jürgen Raue from 1989 can be seen in front of the church.
