Hiking

The Germania monument on the church square commemorates the Wittmund soldiers who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. In the 1970s, the monument lost its sword and shield, which were only rediscovered much later in the attic of the cemetery chapel. In 2008, the entire statue was restored at the initiative of the Wittmund Local History Society.

Hiking

A Germania-Kriegerdenkmal is a widespread form of memorial in the 19th century, which uses the national allegory Germania as a symbol of the German Empire to commemorate the fallen in the German unification wars (1864, 1866, and especially 1870/71). The female figure Germania embodied national unity and patriotism. She was usually depicted defensively with a shield, sword, and crown, or less commonly as a grieving figure.
