"Until May 2, 1933, this building housed the 'Essener Eldorado' dance hall, a popular meeting place for homosexual men and women. Its closure marked the beginning of the systematic exclusion of gay men and lesbians in Essen. The 'Action against Homosexuals' carried out by the Gestapo from 1936 to 1938 destroyed the lives of those affected.
Arbitrary protective custody, mistreatment, and internment in concentration camps were the fate of men who loved men.
