On 18 February 1943 at 21:05, Beaufighter V8325 took off from the English airfield Coltishall for an operation on the island of Vlieland. The aircraft was shot down by German anti-aircraft guns around 23:03 above Texel. Squadron Leader Winward made an emergency landing on the Amstelmeer at high speed.

He became unconscious during the crash and regained consciousness when the aircraft was on the bottom. He managed to swim to the surface and hoist himself into the dinghy. He was later towed away by a boat. He suffered a broken arm and a paralysed hand from the crash. Flying Officer Wood was less fortunate and did not manage to get out of the aircraft. His body washed up a few days later in the harbour of De Haukes. After initially being buried with military honours in Huisduinen, Flying Officer Wood was reburied in Bergen op Zoom after the war.
