THE DÜRER MONUMENT ON THE KORNMARKT IN MÜHLHAUSEN
In 1525, the Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer drew a design for a memorial to the rebellious peasants and citizens defeated in the Peasants' War. It depicts a peasant slumped over on a column of several vertically stacked vessels, harvest gifts, and peasant tools. The peasant rests his head on his right arm; a sword is thrust into his back. This drawing reveals Dürer's direct engagement with the events of the Peasants' War. However, during Dürer's lifetime, the erection of such a memorial would have been completely unthinkable. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War and the state exhibition "Freedom 1525 - 500 Years of the Peasants' War," the memorial was realized as a joint project and thanks to donations from numerous citizens of the city of Mühlhausen. Artist Timm Kregel from Gorsleben created the seven-meter-high bronze monument with a base. It was ceremoniously unveiled on April 5, 2025, at the Kornmarkt in Mühlhausen. (Source: muehlhausen.de)
